Web applications

A web application is an application that is accessed over a network (internet or intranet) with a user interface that is entirely browser based. No installation is necessary on the users computers and software maintenance is easy - software updates are done instantly and at low cost, since the only place the application has to be maintained is on the server.

A web application can be an extension of an existing enterprise application, exposing part of the business logic to the end user. However, if the required logic is not available in an enterprise application, it could just as easily be an independent application containing only the logic required for its purpose. In the short term, this is the most economic option. It is always possible to integrate the logic in an enterprise application later on, if the need arises.
